Colorado State makes a Statement
After their win against the Utah Utes, Colorado State looked to make this contest against the Trail Blazers their fifth win in a row, and would succeed by a wide margin.
Unlike the slower start the Rams had on Saturday, this contest would begin with a bang. Colorado State scored 8 first quarter goals and continued to put heavy pressure on Utah Tech throughout the contest.
Sophomore attackman Jack Rego (#22) had six goals and one assist, leading the Rams offensively. Tanner Marsh (#91) also had seven points on the day, contributing five goals and two helpers. Midfielder Ryan Menard (#53) had another solid performance with three goals and one assist.
Defensively, the Rams stayed consistent throughout the matchup, never allowing more than 3 goals in a quarter. While Senior goalie Chuck Bibaud (#33) got the start, goalies Eli Goth (#99) and Mario Ficco (#30) also got minutes in the second half and kept the defensive pace.
Plays on the Field
The Rams got to work right away, with Jack Rego scoring the opening goal of the game. Ryan Menard would add another to the tally shortly after. The third goal would belong to Tanner Marsh on a feed from Rego.
Marsh would repeat, scoring his second on an assist from Sophomore Hudson Murphy (#9). Then, Rego would get his second goal and third point of the contest. After being up 5-0, Utah Tech would get their first two goals of the game.
Freshman Brandon Krause (#10) found the back of the net and would start the Rams second goal streak. Next was Marsh, completing his hat trick within a single quarter on a feed from Freshman defender Johnnie Alejo (#5). Senior Mason Daly (#18) would add his first of the day, but the Trail Blazers would sneak one in before intermission to end the Colorado State streak at three.
End of First Quarter | Rams 8 – Trail Blazers 3
Ryan Menard would score to get the Rams moving in the right direction to start the second quarter, assisted on a pass from Tanner Marsh. Marsh saw the scoresheet immediately after, scoring his fourth goal of the matchup.
Utah Tech would respond with back-to-back goals, but Sophomore David Treadwell (#6) would get the Rams back on track with a goal assisted by Mason Daly. The Trail Blazers would respond again, but the Rams were on the verge of puting together another run.
Jack Rego would attain and then surpass a hat trick by scoring back-to-back goals, the second being assisted by Jimmy Ponicki (#34). Ryan Menard would be the third Ram with a hat trick before halftime, scoring the last goal before the break.
Halftime | Rams 14 – Trail Blazers 6
It wouldn’t take long for the Rams to resume their goal streak with the goals five and six from Jack Rego, scoring consecutively for the second time. Tanner Marsh would be the second Ram to go beyond a hat trick, getting his fourth goal on a feed from Ryan Menard.
Jimmy Ponicki would score his second of the game, turning a potential turnover into a goal instead. Utah Tech would finally end the seven goal streak and close the third quarter with a goal of their own.
End of Third Quarter | Rams 18 – Trail Blazers 7
Jimmy Ponicki would erase any momentum the Trail Blazers may have carried into the fourth quarter by scoring another goal for the Rams.
Freshman Nick Kruse (#21) would score his first career goal as a Ram, as Colorado State had now broken the 20 goal mark for the first time this season. Utah Tech would score again to break up the scoring runs by the Rams.
Another first career goal would follow for the CSU, this time from Sophomore SSDM Dawson Sheets (#24). The Trail Blazers would score two quick goals to close the game, though it wouldn’t make a dent in the lead that Colorado State had built.
