2010 marked a new era for Colorado State University men’s lacrosse as Alex Smith took the helm for his first full season as head coach. Graduating from Colorado State in 2003 as a goaltender, Smith was a part of three national championship teams as a player. Serving as an assistant coach to lacrosse legend Flip Naumburg, Smith and the Rams won their fourth MCLA title in 2006, making Naumburg and Smith the only people in MCLA history with four national championship rings. Since graduating, Smith became the first player in the MCLA to play for Major League Lacrosse’s Denver Outlaws, where he served as a goaltender from 2006-2010. He also served as an assistant coach and Offensive Coordinator for the Outlaws in 2010 and 2011.
Smith became interim head coach after five years as an assistant to Naumburg in 2009 and led the Rams to a 7-2 record. In his first full season as head coach in 2010, Coach Smith was named the RMLC Conference and MCLA National Coach of the Year after guiding the Rams to a 17-3 season that included an RMLC Championship and national quarterfinal appearance.
In 2012, Smith and the Rams won their fifth MCLA Championship and third straight RMLC Championship on the backs of a 19-2 overall record and an MCLA record-setting defensive performance at the national championship tournament. The Rams followed up their stellar 2012 season with an undefeated 2013 campaign, going 21-0 and winning their sixth MCLA national championship and fourth straight RMLC title. Smith was named RMLC and MCLA Coach of the Year for the second time in his career after the season.
Colorado State University named Smith the Faculty/Coach of the Year for Sport Clubs in 2014.
Through five years, his overall record as head coach is 87-14.
