Simon Fraser, even though they were playing their fourth game in 4 days, came out strong, and led 6-4 at the half, but CSU melted the lead quickly, and won the second half 11-5, wearing down the much larger Clansmen in the process. State dominated most of the statistics for the game, showing that they deserve the #1 ranking for 1999.
The defense, with TY Wilson in goal, held the high-powered Clansmen attack in check after the first quarter. SFU had gained the final by outscoring three opponents 60-35, and were never really tested until today. In all, CSU gave up a tournament low 28 goals in the three games they played.
A happy CSU coach, Flip Naumburg summed up his feelings by saying, “I’m so proud that this team played its best here at the end of the season, when it counted the most”.
Roth had seven goals for the game. Napolilli finished with 4G, 3A, while freshman midfielder Mike Hamm had 2 goals, and junior attackman Ryan Ferrin had 3 assists. Captains senior Brian Linehan, and sophomore Terry Williams each had a goal.
Making the all-tournament first team for CSU were Sophomore Attackman Mike Roth and sophomore defenseman Pat Coy. Senior defenseman Luke Leonard, and sophomore goalie Cale Vanvelkenburgh both made the second team. Roth was also named the tournament MVP, scoring 16 goals in three games.
