The Rams relied on tough defense, not allowing a goal until two minutes were left in the third period en route to a 16-3 win. Texas proved to be a tough test for the Rams as they were very fundamentally sound and athletic. CSU was able to convert on 3/5 man-up situations while holding the Longhorns to 0/10.
Defense was the story of the game as the Rams, led by goaltender Alex Smith’s 12 saves and 1 goal against, shut down the Texas attack for most of the game. Freshman Kevin Kcrek had 2 saves in front of his parents in coming home to Michigan for the first time since high school.
On the scoring side, Mike Napolilli (4 goals, 4 assists), Mike Roth (4g, 1a) and Doug Priebe(3g, 1a) led the way for Colorado State. Mike Hamm also chipped in with 1 goal and 2 assists.
