The scoring started with 10:45 remaining in the period as BYU midfielder Troy Taylor (2 goals, 0 assists) scored on a feed from Jordan Archibald (4g, 2a). CSU came right back with a goal by Adam Sisbarro (1g, 0a) to tie it only thirty seconds later. Then, less than a minute after that, Terry Williams (1g, 0a) put another one past Dave Johnson to give the Rams the lead. That was all that Johnson would allow for the rest of the first quarter as he proceeded to put on a show by making several key saves.
Goals by Dan Doffermyre (1g, 0a) and Archibald sent BYU into the first break with a 3-2 lead. The second quarter started with a 3:00 minute non-releasable penalty on Archibald. CSU could not get any good possession time, however, and BYU gained some momentum on the kill. Steve Austin (3g, 1a), playing midfield for the Cougars, scored the first of his three goals and BYU was off to the races. They outscored the home-town Rams 5-2 in the quarter and took an 8-4 lead into half-time. The third quarter proved to be the most exciting of the game as the two schools battled it out, trading goal after goal. Ryan Ferrin (2g, 2a) scored early as State tried to peck away at the lead.
BYU had an answer every time, however and CSU could not get any closer than 3. Mike Napolilli (6g, 2a) began to get on track as CSU finally started to beat Johnson. When Rex Hardy (4g, 0a) scored with 3:47 left in the quarter, the Rams were down by five and needed to make a push to stay in the game. Attackmen Mike Roth (2g, 0a) and Napolilli provided the fire as they scored two goals in 15 seconds to bring the lead back to three.
The third ended with BYU leading 14-11. State came out fired up in the fourth. Ryan Davis (3g, 3a) played his best game of the year scoring two key fourth period goals. Archibald answered it, however, and BYU was up again by three. But by then, CSUĂs attack had finally woken up. Four straight goals finally gave the Rams the lead with 3:58 left in the game. Face-off men Pat Lambert and Andy Wolper battled strong all day with Marc Hemeon and in the fourth quarter, they stepped up to the challenge.
A goal by Ferrin with 2:10 left sealed the deal for the Rams as they killed off the rest of the game to go back to the RMILL Championship Final game. Ty Wilson played extremely well in goal for the Rams coming up with several huge saves towards the end of the game. Dave Johnson also played well for the Cougars. BYU now waits to find out the seeding for St. Louis as CSU will advance to play the University of Colorado (who beat Fort Lewis 23-7) for the RMILL Championship.
