The depleted Rams hung tough for most of the game as the super attack trio of Ryan Ferrin (3 goals, 3 assists), Mike Napolilli (2g, 3a), and Mike Roth (3g, 0a) led the way scoring over 65% of the teamís goals. Ty Wilson saw his first action of the year in the goal in place of Vanvelkinburgh. Even though Wilson had only a week of practice under him, he played well making 22 saves. Buffalo goalie Adam Birk played extremely well as he anchored a tough CU defense to avenge a 12-3 defeat at the hands of State earlier in the season.
The first quarter ended with CU ahead 5-2 and all the emotion seemed to be on their side. But the State offense went into high gear in the second outscoring the Buffs 5-1 to go into half-time with a 7-6 lead.
The lead became 8-6 just :03 into the third as Ferrin hit a man-up goal. CU rattled off three in a row to take the lead back before Napolilli scored to tie the game. The rest of the quarter went back and forth and CSU and CU took their heated rivalry into the fourth quarter tied at 12. The last period of the game proved to be the most crucial as the Buffaloes were able to control the ball and get off good shots. They put in another three in a row within two and a half minutes to take a lead that they would not give up. CU controlled the face-off much better than in the first meeting between the two teams this year.
Ferrin scored the last goal for State with 10:30 minutes left, but CSU was unable to get on track offensively for the rest of the game as Birk and the Buffs stymied the Rams. This game throws the RMILL into turmoil with BYU and CSU each with one league loss. Last weekís snowout between BYU and CU now looms large as the Buffs look to take the #1 seed into the conference tournament. CU will likely face Ft. Lewis and CSU and BYU will probably meet in a rematch of CSUís 21-11 win last weekend. State looks to get healthy in the two weeks before the tournament as they know that they will not face the same BYU team that came to Fort Collins last week. Games against Mines and Division III Colorado College are coming up next week for CSU as they hope to rebound from a heartbreaking defeat.
