Colorado Springs, CO – The #3 ranked Colorado State Rams used smothering defense and a dominant performance at the face-off ‘x’ to easily dispatch NCAA Division II Adams State College on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Garry Berry Stadium at Wasson HS. The Rams never trailed in the game and dominated every statistical category, including an astonishing 13 of 14 face-offs, to put away the Grizzlies 9-3. CSU wins its season opener for the third straight season.
Colorado State junior face-off midfielder Dan Warfield (Smoky Hill HS / Aurora, CO) was perfect on the day, winning all 11 of his draw attempts and giving the Rams extra opportunities with the ball all game long. In addition, CSU’s ride was in full effect, creating 14 ASC turnovers in the clearing game.
While the Rams offense was stagnant at times, the defense was downright dominant, holding Adams to only 16 total shots. Goaltenders Jack Regan (Sunset HS / Portland, OR) and Koltin Fatzinger (Wheat Ridge HS / Thornton, CO) combined for 12 saves on the afternoon and all six active close defenders held the Grizzly attack to minimal opportunities.
CSU was led in scoring by sophomore Kacy Carter’s (Rock Canyon HS / Castle Rock, CO) three goals while sophomore Sean Smith (Amherst HS / Amherst, NY) added four assists for the Rams. Kevin Bertrand scored two goals to lead Adams State.
Colorado State (1-0 overall) runs its all-time record against the Grizzlies to 2-0. The Rams are back in action on Sunday as they take on MCLA Div. II Northern Colorado at the Loveland Sports Park in Loveland, CO. Next weekend, CSU travels to Portland, OR to take on two nationally ranked teams in #18 Simon Fraser and #4 Chapman. Both games will be aired on www.laxx.tv.
