The game was dominated by the defenses again, although this time it was from some unfamiliar faces. Freshman Mark Plonkey was out with an injury and All-American Pat Coy fouled out in the third quarter.
Jeremy Smith stepped into the spotlight along with long pole middie Nick Tabacchi, who went down to play close defense and helped Cale Vanvelkinburgh (11 saves, 6 goals against) shut down the Cossack attack. Ryan Robichaud also played well at close defense while Chris Gemperline and Joe Glischinski held down the fort at long pole middie.
Once again, the midfield had to step up and score goals. Jared Katz (1 goal, 1 assist), and Doug Priebe (2g, 1a) continued their inspired play over the weekend and the Rams also got a healthy contribution from senior middie Loren Husson (1g, 2a). In the first quarter, the Rams got up 2-0 as the defense kept the Rams in it.
The Cossacks answered back in the second with their own pair of goals and went into the halftime break with a 2-2 tie. Starting the third with a two man advantage, the Cossacks capitalized and got an early one to take their first lead of the game.
The Rams answered back on a man-up goal from Priebe that was assisted by Mike Napolilli (1g, 2a). From there, Sonoma went on a 3-1 run to end the quarter up by two. In the fourth, the Rams finally woke up and scored four unanswered goals to end the game. Nick Harper (1g), Katz, Priebe, and Husson got goals to end the game as the Rams held on for a tough victory.
Next up for the Rams, a homecoming to face league rivals Mines and Fort Lewis in Fort Collins.
