Across the border, the Rams grab a win

NEW WESTMINSTER, British Columbia – The No. 3 Colorado State Rams began their spring break trip to the Pacific Northwest with a win against No. 19 Simon Fraser, Canada’s only MCLA team and the team that ended CSU’s 2010 season in an overtime contest at last year’s national tournament.  The 13-11 win came from great offensive work as the Rams fended off SFU’s fourth quarter run on a chilly but rain-free Saturday evening at Westminister high school.

Patrick Sullivan, number 24, holds off an SFU player during Saturday night's game in New Westminster.

The first half was marked by several plays which gave the Rams an early lead. “It was nice to be ahead all game, but I would have liked to close it out a little better,” Head Coach Alex Smith said. “The fact that we were able to run in transition and get some easy goals really helped us out. They gave us what we expected. We let a few too many of their guys do too much damage, but our offense bailed us out.”

At the end of the first half the Rams were in the lead 7-5. Midfielders Greyson Konkel and Spencer Morrison made notable contributions to the game, each scoring three goals and Cooper Kehoe had three goals and one assist in the complete team offensive effort.

“Greyson really showed the type of player he could be at this level. He is so athletic and a force on both sides of the field,” Coach Smith said. “I thought Austin Fisher and Cooper Kehoe were great controlling the tempo of the game. But really the star of the game was the fact that so many guys were dangerous. It’s big for us because they can’t key in on any one guy.”

Simon Fraser was a difficult team to face and played well in this game – especially on the offensive side of the ball. “They are dangerous in unsettled situations and they make you pay for little mistakes. If you are not right on point, then they are going to get a quick one.” Smith said.

The Rams will also play the University of Washington on this trip. The game will be at the Husky Stadium at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

“We are excited to spend some quality team time together this week. We are also really excited to play at the stadium.  We don’t know a lot about this team so it will be a lot about us and how we play.” Smith said. “I am looking forward again to using a lot of our guys and playing at a high level while having fun in the atmosphere.”
