SWEET HOME CHICAGO
It’s late. I am tired. We handled the Illini of Illinois by a 13-2 count today. It wasn’t as easy as the score might indicate. Illinois has some fine payers. They just don’t have depth enough to hang with us. As Dylan pointed out, a few more players like some of the ones they already have, and that team could be trouble for a team like us.
Our second half numbers might seem consistent with the entire game, but, in my looking glass we appeared better and larger as the game went on, and particularly the second half. The Illini ran out of gas and we used the edge that we have in the depth department.
We didn’t finish/complete great opportunities at a high enough rate. Their goalie played well and made some great stops in and out of the cage, but at the same time, one more pass would have served us well on more than one potential scoring occasion.
ROULETTE TIME – First get the bullet in the chamber
We draw UCSB tomorrow night. This won’t be the first time we will have played a very motivated opponent that is much improved and looking for revenge. The Gauchos got my attention as I watched them easily dispatch Pitt, their first round opponent, just now. The Gauchos are aggressive, athletic, and well-coached. They have some really good players that can make plays for their team. We will have to sharpen our tools, especially the defensive ones.
Defense is going to be key because SB has an offensive-minded coach to go along with his scoring talent. Ten Poles (plus 2 goalies) will be tested Tuesday night.
We are in pretty good shape physically, although the humidity was far more of a factor than I had thought for this afternoon tilt with Illinois. Greyson (#49) gave it a go, but he is looking pretty much out with injury. This is something we have been working around for a while, so it’s not a new thing for us to adapt, or should I say ‘acclimate’ to changing conditions and losing a player of that caliber.
LOOK ALIVE – NEVER DIE
Tuesday’s game is at 7:30, so, in theory, it will be cooler than it was today, but however the thermometer looks, to ‘drink the kool aid’ right, you gotta drink lots of water.
Where else would you rather be? Don’t forget to want some, get some, and take some (t-shirts) home to the fam….
