CSU Battles to 16-9 Victory at UC-San Diego - 3/14/08

La Jolla, CA – The #2 Colorado State Rams got 5 goals and 1 assist each from attackmen Paul Larson (Columbine HS; CO) and Kevin Wolff (Don Bosco Prep; NJ) and 7 second half saves from senior goaltender Tyson Ehinger (Heritage HS; CO) as they downed a pesky UC-San Diego squad 16-9 on Friday night.  The Rams played the unranked Tritons to a 6-6 tie at the end of the first half before outscoring UCSD 10-3 in the second to open their three-game road trip with a victory on a brisk evening on the campus of UCSD.

The Rams never trailed in the game, but UCSD fought hard and stayed within striking distance throughout.  CSU came out fired up in the third quarter and quickly scored four goals, all by either Larson or Wolff to open up a lead that they would never relinquish.  Ehinger had several outstanding saves in the second half to keep the Rams out front.  Larson and Wolff’s goal outputs were both season and career-highs for the attackmen.

CSU got multi-point efforts out of seniors Dylan Bowman (Fairview HS; CO) and Ryan MacDonald (Smoky Hill; CO) and junior Joel Tromburg (Heritage HS; CO), who each had 2 points on the evening.  Four other Rams hit the scoresheet as well.  UCSD was led by Anthony Phelps, who registered 4 goals and 1 assist and Eric Price, who added 3 goals and 1 assist.  Face-off man Ari Gordon won 15 of 23 draws on the day for the Tritons.

Turnovers and missed opportunities plagued CSU for much of the game as the Rams threw the ball away numerous times.  The majority of CSU’s 22 turnovers were unforced and the Rams only managed to clear the ball on 22 of 29 occasions.  Good hustle by CSU’s riding team kept UCSD’s clear to only 12/25 on the evening.  To the Tritons’ credit, they never quit and kept the game interesting to the final whistle.

CSU (5-1) now faces a fresh #9 Sonoma State University squad on Saturday afternoon before playing #20 Loyola Marymount on Sunday.  The Rams remain undefeated against UCSD in four contests since MCLA play began.
