  MacDonald's Three Goals lead #4 Rams Over #10 UCSB 8-3 - 3/27/07

Fort Collins, CO - The #4 Colorado State University men's lacrosse team got a gritty defensive effort and three goals from junior midfielder Ryan MacDonald (Smoky Hill HS; Aurora, CO) to down #10 UC-Santa Barbara on a pleasant afternoon in Fort Collins. CSU led 5-2 at the half and kept UCSB off the scoreboard for the final 17:47 to secure a big non-conference win over the Gauchos. The 8-3 victory was CSU's third straight over UCSB going back to the 2004 National Championship game and moves their record to 7-2 on the season.

The teams combined for 5 goals in the first period of play, but the rest of the game was decidedly defensive. After UCSB took a 2-1 lead with 6:28 remaining in the first period, the Rams held the Gauchos to just one goal over the remainder of the game. CSU long poles Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) and Ian Wilson (Arapahoe HS; Littleton, CO) were stellar as they made life difficult on the UCSB shooters. The Gauchos had only four shots in the first half as CSU stretched their lead to 5-2 after 30 minutes.

The Rams were the beneficiary of three first half Gaucho penalties. Both of CSU's second quarter goals came on the man-up as midfielders Pat Bird (Bishop O'Dowd HS; Oakland, CA) and John Tomlinson (Smoky Hill HS; Aurora, CO) tallied heading in to the break. Senior Brian Stone (Air Academy HS; Colorado Springs, CO) also added a man-up goal to give the Rams three goals on three EMO opportunities. Despite the first half penalties, the game was cleanly played for the remainder and neither team drew a flag for the rest of the way.

CSU goaltender Tyson Ehinger (Heritage HS; Littleton, CO) was good when he had to be, particularly in the fourth quarter. Ehinger had 7 saves, 4 of which came in the final frame to snuff out a potential comeback. UCSB goaltender Juan Carlos Almerido was solid as well, making 12 saves in a very steady effort.

Tomlinson added two helpers to his second quarter goal to give him 1 goal and 2 assists on the afternoon. Senior attackman Danny Stevens (Suffern HS; Suffern, NY) had an identical line to tie for the team lead. CSU also got two goals from Bird. UCSB's three goals were all unassisted as Nick Stratton, Brent Ryan and Daryl Lambert got in the scorebook.

After the Chico State game was rained out on Saturday, this marked CSU's first game action since a March 13 contest with Minnesota-Duluth. The win moves the Rams to 7-2 overall and they remain 2-1 in conference play. They have a day off before tangling with another WCLL opponent as the UC-San Diego Tritons come to town on Thursday afternoon. UCSB drops to 9-3 and will take on the University of Colorado on Thursday before heading back home.
