Three CSU Players Net Hat Tricks in 11-4 Win over #12 Utah - 3/12/07

Salt Lake City, UT – The #5 Colorado State University men’s lacrosse team got three goals a piece from midfielders Stephen Lundberg (Cherry Creek HS; Englewood, CO), and Ryan MacDonald (Smoky Hill HS; Aurora, CO) and three more from attackman Brian Stone (Air Academy HS; Colorado Springs, CO) as they coasted to an 11-4 RMLC conference victory over #12 Utah. CSU’s midfield had its way with the Utes on a sunny Spring day that bordered on hot at times at the campus of the University of Utah. The Rams turned a 5-2 halftime lead into an 11-4 victory that moved their record to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The Utes scored first when Matt Qualey ripped home a big shot past goaltender Tyson Ehinger (Heritage HS; Littleton, CO) just 1:45 into the game, but the Rams would go on to score 11 of the next 14 goals, including six in a row over a 32 minute span from the first through third quarters. Ehinger was stellar, turning in his best performance of the year with 16 saves in just under 50 minutes of work. The junior goaltender had four saves in each quarter for the victory. Freshman goalie Tyler Best struggled against the Rams, saving only 8 shots on the day for Utah in a losing effort.

Utah tied the game at 2 when Stephan Turkula scored with 9:28 left in the first. From there, it was all CSU for the rest of the first half and much of the third quarter. MacDonald scored the only goal of the second quarter and then again early in the third to push the CSU lead to 6-2. He and Lundberg were an exciting duo all game long and made life tough on Utah’s outmatched short stick defenders. Lundberg finished the day with a game high 5 points on 3 goals and 2 assists, a career day for the sophomore midfielder.

While they were flagged 7 times for 5:30 of penalty time, the CSU man-down unit was up to the task. The Rams held Utah scoreless on each of their 7 man-up attempts. Long poles Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA), Tom Fender (Thunder Ridge HS; Highlands Ranch, CO) and Andrew Stein (Columbine HS; Littleton, CO) were excellent all day long, especially in those man-down situations. The Rams were 1/2 in their man-up opportunities.

The Rams held a large shot advantage until the fourth quarter, when the Utes fired 16 times at the CSU net. Unfortunately for Utah, they were only able to get 5 of those shots on goal and Ehinger’s four saves held the Utes at bay. The Rams won the groundball battle by a healthy 51-39 margin. While CSU was 6/9 in the first half on face-offs, Utah captured 8/10 in the second to win the overall battle at the ‘x.’ Nick Teynor was 7 of 11 on the day, but was knocked groggy on a huge hit by senior Pat Bird (Bishop O’Dowd HS; Oakland, CA) that drew an illegal body check penalty.

Colorado State (4-2; 2-1) has one more game on this challenging road trip, facing off against a fresh Minnesota-Duluth team that has moved all the way up to #8 in the national polls. Duluth has been in Utah all week, but they have yet to play a game. CSU will have six more games before they play Colorado in their last RMLC game of the year on April 21. Colorado has yet to play any conference games and tournament seeding will be based largely on their Utah road trip later in the year.
