  #5 Colorado State Drops 8-7 Heartbreaker to #1 Brigham Young - 3/10/07

Provo, UT – The #1 Brigham Young Cougars jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one quarter and held off a furious rally from #5 Colorado State on a sun drenched day in Provo, UT to come away with an important 8-7 RMLC league victory. Despite playing three solid quarters, the Rams were unable to overcome that early deficit and fell to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in RMLC conference play.

BYU scored early in this rivalry game, getting a goal from Zach Davis just :16 into the contest. The Rams answered right back on a man-up goal by senior Ryan Trude (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) two minutes later, but that would be all CSU could muster in an opening period that mostly featured the Cougars with their hands raised in celebration. BYU had five different goal scorers in the first quarter as they threatened to blow the game wide open.

Not intent on letting the game get out of control like it did against Oregon on opening night, the Rams clawed their way back in, scoring two second quarter goals while holding BYU scoreless in the second frame. Junior attackman Ben Wallace (Thomas Jefferson HS; Denver, CO) scored with just 1:20 left in the half and then got another chance on the doorstep a few seconds later, but hit the post with a shot that could have drawn the Rams to within one.

The two teams traded early third period goals from their All-MCLA midfielders, Tyler Monteath and Pat Bird (Bishop O’Dowd HS; Oakland, CA) before BYU reeled off two goals in less than a minute to hold an 8-4 lead with 9:07 left in the third period. From there, the Rams held the powerful BYU offense scoreless as they desperately tried to get back in the game. Goals by senior attackman Danny Stevens (Suffern HS; Suffern, NY) and Trude at the end of the third brought the score to 8-6 to set up the dramatic final quarter.

With both teams going back and forth for most of the quarter, senior defenseman Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) finished off a physical scrum by ending up one on one with BYU’s Christian Kikumoto and stuffed home a shot to make it a one goal game. Just moments later, junior long stick Tom Fender (Thunder Ridge HS; Highlands Ranch, CO) narrowly missed a chance to tie the game on a similar break.

Both goalies had their moments. Junior netminder Tyson Ehinger (Heritage HS; Littleton, CO) was spectacular after the first period, making 14 saves in the losing effort. Kikumoto had several huge stops down the stretch, including a big one on one save on a fast break to propel his team to victory. Kikumoto made 8 stops in the victory.

The Rams won the groundball war, scooping up 49 loose balls to BYU’s 47. BYU did outshoot the Rams 34-30 and won the face-off battle 12-7, including 6/7 in the opening frame.

Bird and Monteath led all scorers with three points a piece while Trude and Stevens were good for two each for the Rams. CSU also got a goal from sophomore midfielder Stephen Lundberg (Cherry Creek HS; Englewood, CO). BYU had two point efforts from attackmen Justin Hier and Mark Davis, as well as two assists each from midfielders Josh Austin and Ted Ferrin.

Colorado State (4-2; 1-1) has a day off before squaring off in another key RMLC league tilt against #12 Utah. They will then take on #8 Minnesota-Duluth before returning home on Tuesday.
