WE HAVE NOT HAD PERFECT PRACTICES

Practice this week was not close to the Utopian preparation situation that every coach might hope for as his team approaches the most important game of the year.

Today we were actually cut off at the pass by lightning in the hood.  A perfect end to a non-perfect work-week.  Oh well.

In fact, rehearsal has been somewhat generally disjointed in recent days.  Improvement has been only a hope.  I could not will myself a better team this week.  Many players had conflicts and school issues that had to take priority.  This always upsets my selfish coaching soul that wants the whole gang working together at all times.  Well, it just ain't that right now.  It also hurts my sensitivities that lacrosse is not the biggest priority for each of them at every moment, but I just need to get over it because there are more than a few things that I am unable to control.  I can freak out or I can make it work.  I have done both, sometimes simultaneously.  My focus right now is to maintain the team play at a certain level and not to let the distractions bother me or us to the point of, well, distraction.

THE GRADUATION GRIND

They (the team) looked tired yesterday, Wednesday, so at one exhausted point I just stopped it and sent them home.  Practice was not even ninety minutes old at the time.  It was as if the wall of functionality for the day had been hit and if I tried to squeeze more out of the time it would lead to only bad things.

I have faith that if I allow them to do what they have to do that our team energy will return in more or less plenty of time, and that at 7:00 tomorrow evening we will be a strong and united front ready to do battle, prepared for the WAR to come and all that.

HAIL TO THE CHIEF

It is supposed to rain in Boulder for the game, too.  As our President pointed out to me yesterday, and he was recently voted (?) THE Officer of the Year for CSU Club Sports, this has been the worst weather year to date.  That probably goes for all my years, not just his four.  Anyway, I congratulate our own Tom Fender (#25) for the award.  He had a leg up with this team because of all the crap we seem to have to go through before anything at all can happen, let alone anything good.  Plus, with club sports you more or less have to jump through hoops and fill out forms before pretty much anything at all can happen.  Tom has to do all that hoop jumping and form filling.  We don't elect a president.  We seek one who has the ability and the desire.  That combination is rare.

Being president of this team is no small undertaking, and I use the word undertaking while knowing all its connotations.
