#1 CSU Overcomes Slow Start to Defeat #17 Oakland 14-5
Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse

By Alex Smith (970-377-1390)
April 8th, 2006

Fort Collins, CO - The #1 Colorado State Rams outscored the visiting #17 Oakland Grizzlies 10-2 in the second half to come away with a 14-5 victory on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Fort Collins, CO. CSU was plagued by penalties throughout the tightly officiated game, but finally started to get things going their way after a sluggish start to the game.

Holding a slim 4-3 lead at halftime, Colorado State was having trouble with Oakland's defense, especially goaltender Chris Wood, who recorded 10 first half saves. Oakland switched to a zone in the second quarter, but the Rams slowly began to find the holes and wear down the defense as the second half wore on. CSU scored the first three goals of the third quarter to push their lead to 7-3 and never looked back.

Twice after Oakland goals, CSU answered in less than fifteen seconds to take any momentum away from the scrappy visitors. CSU can credit the quick tallies to sophomore face-off man Joel Tromburg (Heritage HS; Littleton, CO), who went 15/23 from the face-off 'x' and scooped up nine grounders on the day. Speedy long stick midfielder Matt Reiss (Sycamore HS, Cincinnati, OH) fired in two goals of his own as the CSU "specialty" players were stellar throughout.

The Grizzlies were paced by attackman Joe Opron III, who netted two goals and one assist, but Oakland's best player was clearly Wood in the first half. Wood's ten first half saves gave his team a lot of life heading into the break, but OU was simply unable to penetrate CSU's stout defense and take advantage of extra possessions gained by their goaltender. Wood finished with 14 saves on the day.

Senior Kellin Bershinsky (Poudre HS; Fort Collins, CO) had a great game at close defense for the Rams by picking up five groundballs and causing numerous turnovers. Junior Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) and senior Kurt Nakazono (George Washington HS; Aurora, CO) also did their part in holding the high powered Oakland offense at bay. Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit; Overland Park, KS) made 11 saves, including a couple in tight against good looks.

Junior attackman Danny Stevens (Suffern HS; Suffern, NY) had another productive day, scoring two goals to along with his five assists. Stevens and his fellow attackmen were solid as Tyler Treece (Upper Arlington HS; Columbus, OH), scored three goals while Campbell Diebolt (Central Bucks East HS; Doylestown, PA) added one goal and one assist.

The Rams outscored the Grizzlies 6-1 in the final frame as their depth finally began to wear Oakland down. The Rams got key points from deep into the midfield as well.
Freshmen Steven Lundberg (Cherry Creek HS; Centennial, CO) and Will Cantwell (Lakewood HS; Lakewood, CO) each netted a goal while juniors Brian Stone (Air Academy HS; Colorado Springs, CO) and Ryan Trude (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) had one a piece.

Colorado State (10-2 overall; 1-0 RMLC) will now focus its attention back on conference play for the remainder of the regular season. #13 Utah comes to Fort Collins on Sunday before CSU takes on Brigham Young and Colorado in Denver, CO.

Game Notes:

- The game marked the first ever match-up between the two teams. Oakland, playing out of the CCLA, had never tripped out to Colorado before today.
- Reiss's output today was the second straight game in which the LSM has scored a goal. He netted one against DU Club last weekend as well.
- Goaltender Pete Jokisch continues to play well, pushing his save percentage to 60% with today's performance.
- Stevens continues to lead the team with 57 points on the year. He is also third in groundballs with 40.
