Treece and Stevens Score 7 Points Each as CSU Outruns Arizona State 15-6
Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse

By Alex Smith (970-377-1390)
March 25th, 2006

Fort Collins, CO - #1 Colorado State led 7-5 early in the third quarter over the visiting #20 Arizona State Sundevils before going on a six-goal run that ended the suspense on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Fort Collins. CSU got a stellar performance from their attack unit as Tyler Treece (Upper Arlington HS; Columbus, OH) and Danny Stevens (Suffern HS; Suffern, NY) exploded for seven points a piece while Campbell Diebolt (Central Bucks East; Downingtown, PA) pitched in with three points as well. While the Sundevils battled hard throughout the game, CSU simply had too much depth as this physical game wore into its latter stages.

After Arizona State fought back with a late goal in the first half to pull within 6-3, the Devils got the first of the third quarter to make it a two-goal game. Diebolt's unassisted tally with 12:51 left in the quarter was promptly answered by ASU's Paul Komar to make it 7-5. With ASU's emotions running sky-high, Treece got his third goal of the game to push the lead to three. Then, freshman midfielder Steven Lundberg (Cherry Creek HS; Englewood, CO) scored unassisted just over a minute later to make it 9-5 and the Rams never looked back.

After Lundberg's goal, junior midfielder Pat Bird (Bishop O'Dowd HS; Oakland, CA) nearly lifted the goal off the ground on a man-up ripper that put a punctuation mark right in the middle of the CSU run. Bird and Lundberg were both major factors, scoring two points a piece and helping the Rams own the middle of the field. Bird was outright dominant at times, clearing the ball, making big hits and drawing the attention of the ASU defense. When all was said and done, the Rams had scored eight third quarter goals and led 14-6.

Colorado State set the tempo at a high pace early in the game and jumped out to a 4-0 lead just seven minutes into the game. In a sign of things to come, Treece dunked a shot on feed from Stevens three minutes in to open the scoring. Treece finished with five goals and two assists while Stevens' seven points came on two goals and five assists. Arizona State scored two quick ones to make the score 4-2, but CSU answered with two of their own to get the lead back to four at the end of the quarter. Arizona State then held the Rams scoreless for the second quarter as they clawed their way back into the game.

In addition to being the first true home game for the Rams this season, this game also marked a bit of history for CSU. Senior goaltender Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit HS; Overland Park, KS) made three saves in the first quarter to pass Alex Smith (2003) on the all-time saves list at Colorado State University. Jokisch was simply outstanding throughout the game, making several big stops in the first half that kept the Rams in the lead. Jokisch finished with 14 saves and a couple of athletic clears. Jake Delashmit played well in goal for Arizona State, making nine stops.

Arizona State was paced by attackmen Adam Christie and Tyler Westfall, who scored two goals each. Another bright spot for the Rams was the play of midfielder Ryan MacDonald (Smokey Hill HS; Aurora, CO), who scored two goals on the day.

Colorado State (7-2 overall, 1-0 RMLC) hosts another home game on Wednesday as the University of Northern Colorado makes the 30 minute drive from Greeley. Arizona State (5-3) will play the University of Colorado on Sunday before heading back to the Southwest to finish their season. The Rams will play the University of Denver's club team on April 1st before a crucial home doubleheader against Oakland University and the University of Utah on April 8th and 9th.

Game Notes:

- CSU was without the services of starting long pole Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA), who was held out of the game after getting a little banged up from the Utah State game last night.
- The weather was absolutely picturesque as sunny skies and mid-60's temperatures greeted both teams.
- Colorado State's man-up unit had a very effective day, scoring three goals on seven chances.
- While the Sundevils were flagged for nine penalties, two of them came after the final horn had sounded as the game began to get a little chippy.
- The Rams now lead the all-time series with ASU 2-0 after defeating the Sundevils in Tempe, AZ to start the 2004 season.
