Notre Dame de Namur (Div. II) Downs Colorado State 12-8
Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse

By Alex Smith (970-377-1390)
March 13th, 2006

Novato, CA - Division II Notre Dame de Namur raced out to a 5-2 lead after the end of the first quarter and never looked back as they outpaced the #2 Colorado State Rams for a 12-8 victory on Monday afternoon. The game was played about an hour north of San Francisco at San Marin High School in Novato, CA under intermittent rain showers. CSU closed the gap to 8-7 early in the third quarter but were unable to get on top of the Argonauts and fell to 1-1 on their second trip to California this season.

Colorado State scored two of the first three goals of the game as sophomore attackman Campbell Diebolt (Central Bucks East HS; Buckingham, PA) and senior midfielder Michael Murphy (Lake Oswego HS; Lake Oswego, OR) got things going for the Rams. But NDNU scored four goals in the last 2:14 of the first quarter to take a 5-2 lead at the end of the first frame and held their lead for the remainder of the game.

After Colorado State's Steven Lundberg (Cherry Creek HS; Englewood, CO) scored a goal to make the score 8-7, the Argos scored four in a row from the end of the third quarter into the fourth to ice the game. As the third quarter ran down, CSU had a chance to get the lead down to one again, but an errant pass led to an important NDNU fast break goal that put the Rams on the wrong end of a 10-7 score at the end of the third. That goal seemed to take a lot of wind out of CSU's sails down the stretch and the Argonauts finished the game off.

The Rams got a welcome surprise at the face-off 'x' as sophomore Joel Tromburg (Heritage HS; Littleton, CO) was 12/22 against his former team. Tromburg transferred from NDNU to CSU at the beginning of the season and played one of his better games of the season. NDNU was led by Tim Campeau (3 goals, 1 assist) and Cam Foss (1g, 2a) while Danny Stevens (Suffern HS; Suffern, NY) had three points for the Rams.

NDNU goaltender Mike Ferrari was a big factor in the game with 11 saves and three penalties. The feisty goaltender made some good saves in the third quarter to keep the Rams from drawing closer. Senior goaltender Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit HS; Overland Park, KS) made 8 saves for CSU.

CSU (3-2) will now return to MDIA action for the remainder of the year as they fall to 1-2 against varsity opponents in 2006. The Rams play Stanford on Tuesday before coming home to take on Missouri on March 19th. They will finish the month of March at home and will be in the state of Colorado until late April after a grueling first month of the season.

Game Notes:
- This game was the first Division II contest for the Rams in recent team history. It was also the first time the two teams had ever met.
- Stevens' three points now gives him 20 points on the season. He is averaging four points a game through the first five.
- Lee Cates (Rangeview HS; Aurora, CO) continues to lead the team in groundballs with 17. Junior defenseman Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) and senior long stick midfielder Matt Reiss (Sycamore HS; Cincinnati, OH) are tied for second with 14.
- Despite being located near San Jose, CA, the Belmont-based Argos were forced to move the game to the North Bay Area for the game. San Marin HS hosted the event and had a healthy base of youth and high school players on hand for the game. The game was played on San Marin's turf field.
