HELLO - GOODBYE
We made good use of the Bronco NFL bye week to have our end-of-fall banquet yesterday at
my house. It was a mid-afternoon dinner for about 60. We did our meeting/traditions stuff
as well, and the Captains for CSU lacrosse 2006 are set. They are Kellin Beshinsky (#29
D- 2006), Michael Murphy (#9 M 2006), Pete Jokisch (#3 G
2006), and Pat Bird (#1 M 2007). These four will be our fearless leaders for
this most important "comeback" year for our program and our team.
We gave fewer game balls (balls given to individuals for a game won) yesterday than we ever
have in any season I have ever coached. There was little disappointment because of that
fact, only excitement and the anticipation of 2006.
We talked a little about our goals, and more specifically I asked them for their individual
ones. I would love this part, but they (players) all just sit there and act like I just
asked them to empty the kitty litter box when I ask them what their individual goals are.
Its like pulling teeth. I know they are just kids, but it is my hope that one day,
when I say "goal setting" to a team that they will get excited and pop off about
all their personal agendas.
The team goal thing comes easily. They all have ideas (same one) for that.
NOTHIN BUT NOT FUNNY formerly, NOTHIN BUT MONEY
We no longer have a five-year fall winning streak or whatever it was to live up to. We hopefully
have now taken care of our punishments from last autumn and years past as well. We are not
off of double secret probation, and it is my guess we never will be. We are, after all,
Animal House in so many ways in so many minds. I do hope "they" cease to continue
to hold something over us that may or may not have happened in a hotel in Eugene, Oregon
a few years ago over spring break. That place looked more like a condemned building where
you might be able to easily "score" something other than goals. What a dive, and
those kind of places are always the first to call the school president or whatever if one
of the players farts too loud. We now try to stay in, believe it or not, nicer, more expensive
places while on the road, and so far so good.
Being polite and representing the university well are always big points for me, but these
issues are more important than ever for us now. Behaving well will be a big part of how
well this year will go for us. I am really tired of the whole cops and robbers thing with
the administration, but I have to accept the reality that it will always be there.
GOAL SETTING
I wanted to make note of the banquet, but my writing mind has been busy with the telling
of our goalie saga, and so I want to get on with that next.
