Rams Win 7-6 as No. 3 Sonoma State Pushes No.1 Colorado State to Double Overtime
Ft. Collins, CO

By Garrett Fitzgerald
March 29, 2005

In what was by far their biggest home contest of the year, the #1 ranked Colorado State Rams battled the #3 ranked Sonoma State Seawolves in a gripping double overtime game on the campus of Colorado State University. On a chilly and overcast afternoon, Sonoma pushed to a 3-1 halftime behind staunch defending and smart goaltending. The second half saw Colorado State tie the game but these two top five teams needed more than 60:00 to decide this game. In the two overtime periods, both teams had their chances but the Rams were able to come out on top 2:30 into the second extra frame on senior Tim Farquhar's (Collegiate HS, VA) second goal of the day.

Farquhar's goal came after numerous chances for both teams in the initial 6:30 of extra time. Sonoma goalie Warren Pringle stopped three shots in the first OT period while a Chris Esposito's shot sailed just over the crossbar as the Rams dodged their own bullet. The second OT saw the Rams squander an extra-man chance while Sonoma was unable to back up a shot. After the Rams gained possession, Farquhar dodged his defender from the right side of the goal and beat him to the crease to get off a high shot on the run that ended the drama.

Sonoma forced overtime late in the fourth quarter while trailing 6-5. After the Rams gained possession on their defensive end, Travis Conelison snagged an errant clearing pass and shot it while CSU's Pete Jokisch was caught out of the goal on the clear to tie the game with 1:21 remaining. It was Cornelison's third goal of the game in an outstanding effort by the first year Sonoma attackman. The fourth quarter was back and forth as each team pumped in two goals. CSU got goals from Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest HS, CO) and Danny Stevens (Suffern HS, NY) while Sonoma's other goal was scored by Jeremy Dale. Colorado State junior midfielder Michael Murphy (Lake Oswego HS, OR) had two crucial assists in the fourth quarter as the captain came of age a bit in the final period.

Sonoma raced out to a 3-1 halftime lead thanks to a gritty defensive effort and good goaltending by Pringle, who finished with 12 saves. It took the Rams nearly 18:00 minutes to solve the Seawolves' defense when Farquhar got his first goal early in the second on a man-up opportunity. Sonoma was able to answer right back less than 15 seconds later to give the Seawolves their 3-1 advantage. Neither team was able to score for the rest of the first half.

CSU's man-up came through with two big goals, the first by Farquhar in the second quarter and the second by senior Stanitz-Harper late in the third. Stanitz-Harper played steadily all game and his two goals were big in sustaining a sickness-depleted CSU team to the end. Another big factor in the game was junior Tim Chorey (Algonquin HS, MA). Chorey was moved to attack midway through the third quarter and scored two goals within two minutes to tie the game at 3-3. Stanitz-Harper gave the Rams their first lead of the game with his man-up goal 10:24 into the third period.

Senior captain Ryan Price (Arapahoe HS, CO) left the game in the first quarter with a dose of food poisoning leaving freshman Dylan Preble to pick up the slack. Preble filled in admirably at close defense in his most extensive field time of the year to this point and helped the Rams kill off all four Sonoma man-ups. CSU was also playing without the services of midfielder Pat Bird (Bishop O'Dowd HS. VA), who rested an injury and took the day off. Junior goaltender Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit HS, KS) finished with 11 saves for Colorado State in another solid performance.

With this exciting overtime game under their belts Colorado State (11-0) will face Div. B Colorado School of Mines on Friday April, 1. State will then have another week off until they play RMLC opponent Utah State April, 8 in an important divisional game.

Game Notes:
- The overtime game was the first for the Rams since they played Stanford in the semifinals of the national tournament in 2002, a game CSU won 10-9. This game was CSUs first double overtime game since coach Flip Naumburg's arrival at CSU.
- CSU has now won the last four games against Sonoma dating back to 2002. CSU defeated Sonoma 10-6 last year in Eugene, OR. Sonoma's last victory against CSU was in the 2002 national championship game.
- The statistical battle was fairly even between the two teams.
o Sonoma won 11-17 face offs
o Colorado State cleared the ball 76% of the time to SSU's 68.8%
o The Seawolves scooped up 41 groundballs to the Rams 34
o CSU out shot Sonoma 49-31 in the game
- The Rams now average 16.57 goals per game while holding their opponents to 5.76 gpg.
- Shay Cunningham still maintains his scoring lead for the Rams with 44pts, Stanitz-Harper and Farquhar are nipping at his heels with 42 pts and 41pts respectively.

CSU vs CU
On Saturday, April 16, at 7:00 pm the big game will be played at the neutral site of Shea Stadium, on the south side of Denver, in Highlands Ranch. Last year the game, which is and was coordinated and promoted by the CSU Ram Lacrosse Alumni Association, drew almost 3000 fans. Mark your calendars.
