Rams Defeat Conference Rival BYU 12-10, Move to 10-0 on the Season
Provo, UT

By Garrett Fitzgerald
March 15, 2005

In front of 800+ fans on Brigham Young's South Field the #2 ranked Colorado State Rams defeated the #3 ranked Brigham Young Cougars last Tuesday night 12-10. The Rams climbed to 10-0 on the season while handing the Cougars their second loss of the year. The game was highly contested with both teams having a share of the lead in the 4th quarter. This CSU vs. BYU match up once again proved again why these two teams have one of the greatest rivalries in the MDIA.

At the start of the first period the two RMLC teams swapped possessions for nearly 10:00 with no goals for either squad. State was the first team to get on the board with 5:58 left the 1st quarter. Senior captain Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest HS, CO) split a BYU double team with a roll dodge then fired a shot past the Cougars freshman netminder Chris Powers. Stanitz-Harper was creating match-up problems all day for the Cougars in route to a two goal and one assist performance. Brigham Young was quick to answer with a Mark Tschagenny diving cross crease goal at 5:17. The Rams got one more goal in the quarter but BYU once again answered less than 15 seconds later to keep the score deadlocked at 2-2 through one period of play.

In the 2nd quarter Colorado State took early advantage of a Cougar penalty when they converted on their second man up opportunity of the game. Senior Tim Farquhar (Collegiate HS, VA) was able to thread the needle to an open Shay Cunningham (Algonquin HS, MA) on the door step for the Ram's third goal of the contest. The sophomore, Cunningham also got the next goal for the Rams after defensemen Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS, PA) cleared the ball the length of the field for a fast break. Schnirel dumped it Cunningham on the crease when he found a seam in the BYU defense putting CSU ahead 4-2 with 7:05 left in the 2nd quarter. Brigham Young got the final goal of the half when midfielder Walker Bateman took a pass from Tschagenny and put it home with just 49 seconds remaining. The goal brought the Cougars to with one as the half ended.

BYU came out inspired in the 3rd quarter the Cougars was able to tie the game just 11 seconds after the opening whistle. Brigham Young won the face off, forced an unsettled situation and Sophomore Zach Davis found rope to tie the score at 4-4. The Rams scored the next two goals; the first was the Farquhar to Cunningham connection again at 13:23. The second of the two came from sophomore midfielder Ryan Trude (Mt. Lebanon HS, PA) who put a well placed shot just inside the goalies shoulder. Trude's goal widened state State's lead to 2 for the time being at 10:43. The Cougars were far from done as the held the Rams scoreless for the remainder of the quarter while getting three goals themselves. Tschagenny buried 2 of the 3 goals during the three goal Cougar run including an extra man goal with just 7 seconds remaining in the quarter. The late goal was Tschagennys third on the day, to giving Brigham Young their first lead of the game at 7-6 just before end the third quarter.

The Cougars took the lead and the momentum going into the fourth quarter. Their one goal advantage was short lived however. The Rams rattled of three goals in less than 28 seconds, and scored four unanswered goals to open the final frame. It started with Cunningham getting his fourth goal of the game from Sophomore Danny Stevens (Suffern HS, NY) at 13:11. On the ensuing face off Farquhar clamped the ball and took off uncontested toward the Cougar goal where he stuck a shot in the top corner. Farquhar was in All-American form as he went 2-2 on the day while also taking to his new face off duties going 9-13 at the "X". Stevens finished off the quick spurt with his first goal of the game at 12:23. State midfielder Tyler Blue (La Costa Canyon HS, CA) got fourth straight goal for his squad with a blistering shot that went of the crossbar and in the back of the goal giving State a 9-6 advantage. The Cougars looked like they were going to mount a comeback with a goal by Mark Davis at 8:13 and 1:00 CSU penalty. BYU won the face and shot the ball into the side netting and it was recovered by CSU, they were able to clear in to the Cougar end. Then Stanitz-Harper found him self isolated with his defenseman 10 yards high of the crease. He was able to make a move past his man and give Colorado State an 11-8 lead. Brigham Young was able to score to two more goals but CSU got an insurance goal from junior Tim Chorey (Algonquin HS, MA) at 4:33.The Cougars never gave up as the pressured the CSU goal in the last 4:00, CSU got another one minute penalty with 1:28 remaining but the Ram's Defense stepped up didn't let the Cougars score again. When it was all said and done the Rams out scored Brigham Young 6-3 in the 4th quarter to get their second conference victory of the '05 season.

The Colorado State defensive squad led by captains Ryan Price (Arapahoe HS, CO) and Kellin Bershinsky (Poudre HS, CO) was effective once again. Price was a ground ball machine scooping up 7gbs on the evening. Bershinsky despite playing with a shoulder problem was caused two turnovers and grabbed 3gbs. In goal Pete Jokisch who was coming of a huge game against UCSB just days before he also had several good stops, in total ending the game with 11 saves and 10 goals against. The BYU goalie combination of Chris Powers and Glenn Makechnie did what they could against the Rams offense. Freshmen Chris "Chucky" Powers started the game and had 10 saves while allowing four goals, Makechnie had six saves while allowing 8 goals.

The Ram's next game will come against another top-ten opponent when they take on #3 Sonoma State in Ft. Collins, CO on March 29th.
