Rams Outlast 4th Quarter Run by Div. III Colorado College Tigers for 14-11 Victory
Colorado Springs, CO

By Garrett Fitzgerald
February 27, 2005

For the second time in as many years Colorado State was victorious over in-state rival NCAA Division III Colorado College on Saturday afternoon with 14-11 win. The Rams were in control throughout most of the game dictating the tempo of play and taking a 12-6 lead into the 4th quarter. The Tigers tried to mount a comeback aided by 4:30 of CSU penalties during the 4th quarter but it was too little, too late as State's defense clamped down and walked off the field with a victory, and a 6-0 record on the season.

Colorado State's offense was dynamic in the opening quarter, scoring the first three goals of the game and two goals in the last 0:57 seconds of the opening period to put the Rams up 5-3. Patrick Bird (Bishop O'Dowd HS, CA) accounted for two of the Rams' first quarter goals. Bird was an offensive force for CSU by scoring four goals in the game.

CSU again struck first in the 2nd quarter when Tim Chorey (Algonquin HS, MA) ripped a shot passed the CC goaltender only to be answered seconds later by Colorado College keeping the game close at 6-4. After trading possessions for the next 8:11 the Tigers' Matt Garrow brought his team to within one, scoring the third of his four goals on the day. Garrow was simply on fire assisting on five more goals giving him a hand in nine of CC's eleven goals. Pat Bird got one more at 1:08 giving CSU a 7-5 half time lead.

In the third quarter Colorado State came out firing on all cylinders. Led by sophomore Shay Cunningham (Algonquin HS, MA) the Rams went on a devastating tear scoring five goals in the period. Cunningham provided the virtual nail in the coffin when he scored an astonishing behind the back top corner bounce shot during a CC penalty. Danny Stevens (Suffern HS, NY) had one of the best games of his Ram career, making a serious impact on the offensive end with one goal and five assists.

CSU padded their lead to seven just a few minutes into the final quarter but Colorado College fought hard to the end to keep the game close. Colorado State's defense was rock solid for much of the game and held the Tigers to 2-9 on extra man opportunities. On the opposite end of the field the Rams were efficient again going 2-3 on their EMOs. In goal, the Rams got another enormous game from junior goaltender Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit, KS) who had 16 saves.

Next up for the Rams is a home game against the University of Denver Club team before a trip to Los Angeles to take on the #1 UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos on March 12. The road trip will be one of the most challenging of CSU's season as they face #20 Utah in a neutral site game in Los Angeles before traveling to Provo, UT to take on #3 Brigham Young in RMLC league contests.

Game Notes:

- This is only CSU's third win in history against their rivals from CC and head coach Flip Naumburg's second win in a row against his alma matter.
- Shay Cunningham now leads the team in points with 32 points after his 4 goal performance on Saturday.
- Pete Jokisch currently boasts a 63.8% save percentage on the season.
- Midfielder Michael Murphy (Lake Oswego HS, OR) and Defensemen Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS, PA) are tied for the team lead in groundballs with 17 each after scooping up two apiece on Saturday.
