Colorado State’s Depth Too Much for Duluth; Rams Win 22-4
Ann Arbor, MI

The Colorado State Rams and the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs were scheduled to
play a game in Fort Collins, CO in 2002. But a freak winter snowstorm
cancelled Duluth’s trip to the Rocky Mountains, meaning that Saturday’s
contest in the Michigan Invitational would be the first ever game between
the two teams. CSU was coming off an impressive win over the host Michigan
Wolverines while the Bulldogs lost to #2 UC-Santa-Barbara in opening day
action. #1 Colorado State jumped out to an early lead on #12
Minnesota-Duluth and never looked back in a 22-4 win.
The Rams raced out of the gates to a 7-0 first quarter lead behind some
impressive ball control and riding. The Bulldogs had trouble clearing the
ball to their offense for much of the game, and the Rams were able to take
advantage of it to the tune of 14 first half goals. Tim Chorey (Algonquin
HS, MA) scored back-to-back goals in the opening quarter run, but he was the
only repeat scorer in the quarter. Chorey finished with 2 goals and 2
assists.
Fourteen players scored a point for the Rams, who were without the services
of longstick midfielder Mark Plonkey (Golden HS, CO). Even without Plonkey,
the Rams controlled the middle of the field, mostly thanks to the effort of
Dave Clark’s (Cherry Creek HS, CO)18/21 face-off performance. Clark was
dominant and gave the Rams a chance on every draw.
Seven different players had three points or more, including attackman Kelten
Johnson (Bainbridge HS, WA), who tallied 2 goals and 3 assists. But the
shining player in the white uniforms Saturday was freshman Danny Stevens
(Suffern HS, NY), who scored 5 goals to go along with his 2 assists.
Stevens played a majority of the game with the second attack unit and turned
in his best effort in his young career.
Everyone on the Colorado State travel roster got time, including all three
goalies. Compensating for Plonkey’s absence were Adam Schnirel (Mount
Lebanon HS, PA) and Kurt Nakazono (George Washington HS, CO), and both
played well in the win.
The Rams move to 15-0 on the season and play the #2 UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos
on Sunday to finish their road trip. The game will be a rematch of the 2003
National Championship game won by CSU 6-4. The Gauchos were upset by
Michigan on Saturday night for their first loss of the season.
