Colorado State opens home campaign with victory over Northern Colorado
Fort Collins, CO
By Alex Smith
February 19, 2004
Colorado State’s men’s lacrosse team opened its home
season in emphatic fashion on Thursday afternoon as they dispatched the
University of Northern Colorado 19-1. The Rams scored the first ten goals of
the game before the Bears could get on the scoreboard with just over a
minute left in the first half. Fifteen different Rams registered points in
the effort.
While the snow and rain held off for most of the day, the start of the game
brought cold and wet conditions to the Rams’ practice field in Ft. Collins,
CO. Soon, a light mist turned into large rain drops, which gave way to
pea-sized pellets of snow and ice through the middle quarters. Everyone
ended up cold and wet during the game.
The Rams got on the scoreboard first thanks to a nice play by long stick
Mark Plonkey (Golden HS, CO), who dodged the goalie and threw an back hander
into the top of the net. The Rams proceeded to score three more goals in the
next two minutes to open up a lead that they would never relinquish. Tim
Farquhar (Collegiate HS, VA) had several excellent dodge and finishes and
ended up with two goals and two assists.
Everyone on the team got in the game as early as the second quarter for the
Rams as many freshmen got their first game experience. Atackman Matt Reiss
(Sycamore HS, OH) tallied five assists in the game to go along with Kelten
Johnson’s (Bainbridge HS, WA) three goals and two assists. Danny Stevens
(Suffern HS, NY) also had four points at attack.
Dave Clark (Cherry Creek HS, CO) was dominant from the face-off area,
winning nine of thirteen draws.
Despite being outgunned, the Bears fought hard the entire game and never
quit.
Next up for the Rams is a historic meeting against the Colorado Buffaloes in
the Pepsi Center on Sunday before a huge road trip to Colorado Springs to
play #6 Texas A&M and Division III Colorado College.
Game Notes:
- The game was played on the Rams’ practice field for the first time in team
history.
- Defensemen Ryan Price and Mark Plonkey both scored goals on the day,
Plonkey’s with a long pole and Price’s with a shorty in preparation for
Sunday’s game.
- Defenseman Michael Greeson missed the game due to injury and is
questionable for the Colorado game.
- Freshman Danny Stevens recorded his second hat trick in a row after a
three goal performance against Arizona State
