Colorado State beats Colorado in Overtime
by Lindsay Albanesi, '03

Coming off of a successful trip to Arizona, the CSU Men’s Lacrosse team was looking to continue their unbeaten streak with their spring season opener against the arch-rival team from Boulder, the University of Colorado (CU) Buffaloes.

The game on Saturday saw a little bit of everything. The #14 ranked Buffs came to the Fort hoping for a win, while the #2 ranked Rams were expecting the win. It was cloudy, then chilly, then snowy and finally sunny. The weather almost resembled the way the game was going.

The first half went to CU. They ran the show and undoubtedly caught the Rams off guard with their high intensity. The Rams were only able to muster one goal in the first quarter thanks to Jimmy Hasson and his great feed from Jared Katz. The Buffs tallied three goals in the first to make it 3-1 in favor of the Buffs after the first. The Rams also lost a key player, Tim Farquhar, early in the game to what may be a cracked tibia or shin and he could be out for a while. The second quarter brought more Buff stamina and it was soon 5-1, and then 5-2 before the Rams finally got going to tie it up at 5-5 at the half thanks to two goals from Kale Nelson, Kelton Johnson’s first and another from Jimmy Hasson.

After the half, the tides began to change and the Rams kicked it into high gear. The third quarter brought only one goal for the Rams with Kelton Johnson’s second goal from Mark Plonkey, while the Buffs pushed four more goals past CSU goalie Alex Smith to make it 9-6 CU. The fourth quarter brought most of the action. The Rams punched in five goals in the nail biting last quarter, but also lost another player, Joe Glishinski to what appeared to be a season ending knee pop. Kelten Johnson started it off with an unassisted goal – his third, followed by another one from Kale Nelson and one from Derek Koll. The Buffs could only muster two more, but the Rams struggled to stay in the game as it was 11-9 in CU’s favor with 4:30 left in the game. The last two minutes of the game saw the Rams come alive and prove they weren’t going down without a fight. Jimmy Hasson crammed two more past CU goalie Chris Bluse to tie the game at 11-11 and send it to overtime.

The Rams won the opening face-off in overtime and scored quickly. Kelton Johnson hit high net with his feed from Kale Johnson to finish the game and end the sudden death overtime with a 12-11 Ram win. The Rams remain undefeated.
